What It Is
The Tournoi du Faucon Noir is the Black Falcon School of Arms' annual medieval combat event, in which knights and squires gather to test their skill and mettle against one another in both armored and unarmored combat. Whether you want to experience the thrill of late medieval chivalric culture firsthand, or merely come to cheer on your favorite knight, our Deed of Arms is your Front Range destination for swordplay and medieval pageantry!
Where It Is
Glen Eyrie Castle is a historic site nestled at the base of the mountains amidst stunning Colorado beauty. Built over a century ago to recall the majesty of British castles, it is a privately-owned conference center and retreat destination. Only a few minutes' drive from Colorado Springs, it occupies a world all its own. Situated upon hundreds of acres of gorgeous green swards, light forest, and towering red stones, it is the perfect host facility for our medieval Deed of Arms.
Participants and support staff should arrive at 8:30 and check in at the Gatehouse. Setup of the Lists, Unarmored Ring, pavilions, and spectator area should occur now, as well as change into medieval garb.
All knights and squires must submit their weapons and armor to inspection in order to confirm that it meets safety standards. All fighters should begin to arm themselves.
Most medieval combat was fought without the benefit of a full harness, though it was no less sophisticated. Challenges of unarmored longsword and sword & buckler will begin in the Lists. All participants are guaranteed at least three marshaled fights throughout the day. Equipment requirements and rules of engagement can be found in the Palmer Accords.
Elite warriors of the medieval era would wear the best armor that they could afford, whether they were noble knights or rich commoners. Challenges of armored longsword, pollaxe, and spear will begin in the Lists. All participants are guaranteed at least three marshaled fights throughout the day. Unarmored combat will move to its own ring. Equipment requirements and rules of engagement can be found in the Palmer Accords.
Knights, squires, and support staff are all invited to relax and recharge with catered lunch provided by Glen Eyrie Castle! After a few hours of fighting, hearty food and cold drinks are always a welcome respite.
Scheduled challenges of both knights and squires will continue after lunch, and open challenges may be fought upon the green and in the Lists as time permits. At the end of the day, all participants will vote upon the combatants who showed the most skill and chivalry, and the First Among Equals for both Knights and Squires will receive awards.
Once awards have been given, all participants and support staff will help tear down the Lists, rin, and pavilions. Another year's Deed of Arms will come to an end, and the weary will retire to showers and a place with food and beer (to be announced).
